Need Help With Writing On Wooden Cross For Brothers Grave?
OK. I am making a cross for my brothers grave who passed away just before Xmas.
So far I have the timber. I have a pretty good idea how to make the basic cross and to varnish etc but when it comes to how I am going to do the wording on it that will last, I am confusing myself with ideas.
As I do not have any carving tools but am prepared to get a few if necessary coz it will be probably a one off project.
I would like to have done a little something to the edges so it wouldn't be just plain and boring. Maybe shape the ends slightly also.
The wood is dressed Oak. Really nice piece of timber which is why I want to varnish rather than paint.
Oh, and 1 more question, what is the best way to get the lettering all prepared all nice and neat.
Can I buy a alphabet template?
I am handy with a saw, hammer, nails, drill, etc but it sometimes takes me a while to make up my mind just what I want and getting it right.
Any tips and helpful advice would be so appreciated guys.
You could use a stencil, then scroll saw cut the letters and attach then to the cross, for a raised effect.
You can even buy metal ones.
For the edges of the wood, the easiest thing to do is with a plane or disc sander, champer/bevel the edges.
