I want to hear from people currently in the Air Force or that were in the Air Force, what is the USAF like?
I'm a 25 year old single guy that's very serious about joining the United States Air Force but I want to know as much about it as I can before I join. I don't want to join and then be like "oh shit, what did I get myself into?" All I've talked to was the recruiter, but I want to talk to regular people that are currently serving or have served and I want to hear your opinions. I want to know the good and the bad, just tell it straight up. I'd really appreciate it, this is a big decision for me.
I just completed Tech School for C-130 Crew Chief so, I can give you all the info you could want about the training side of the USAF.
BMT is very stressful, the entire idea is to break you and then mold you into what the military needs. You will have very few privilages allowed to you and you will be watched very closely by the MTI's. You will be in a traing flight of about 50 people and you will sleep, eat, and train together at all times. These people will be as close to you as family by the end of BMT. You will be yelled at constantly and you will be made to feel like you are lower than dirt. Don't ever let anyone tell you that Basic training in the Air Force is easier than any other branch, because our fitness training is right below the marines fitness training. You will have to run every other day and then you will do strength training on the other days. You will have no communication with the outside world for the first 2-3 weeks and then you only get letters and you can send out letters. MTI's will tear the dorm apart just so you can clean it as fast as you can. You will do pushups, squat thrusts, and flutter kicks until you feel sick, and then you will do more. By the last week you will feel a sense of pride that you have never felt before and you will notice a change in the person you were. That is what BMT is like.
Tech School varies with the job you get. You will have a 3 phase program that will allow you more privilages as you go along. By the third phase you will be able to get off the base in your civilian clothes and just enjoy the surrounding area. Other than that you have alot of class time and you will still have the fitness program, but it will only be three times a week during tech school. You will also be able to associate with other people alot more and you can use your cell phone during non duty hours. By far tech school is a whole lot better than basic.
Although once you go operational you will have so many more privilages that you never have during any of the training part.
It really is worth all that you put into it. If you do join, just remember this, "Do not base your judgement of the Air Force by anything that goes on while in training, because it is nothing like the operational side of the Air Force." This is a big decision and it will change your life. I hope that this helps you.

Youngsters learn early the cliche' "money makes the world go round" and yet have very little sense when it comes to earning and exercising responsible stewardship over their monetary resources. This is primarily rooted in the fact that parents fail miserably when it comes to teaching children the difference between a debit and credit.
Most parents I know simply choose to avoid the money discussion altogether mainly because they have little understanding themselves in the area of money management. Parents are merely youngsters in adult bodies who had not been properly taught how to effectively use money as a tool.
During times when money is plentiful parents typically dole it out unmindful of the unspoken lessons being conveyed. However, it's especially when economics are leaner that bank balances are scrutinized more closely and parents remember they still have the word "No" in their vocabulary.
This is when the lessons of money management are generally taught or discussed. The lesson here is simply "There isn't enough to spare" -- new jeans, sneakers or those unexpected events just have to wait. It is unfortunate for young people not to have the proper training they need in the area of money management. There are four lessons I believe every parent ought to teach their children about money whether during plentiful times or scarce:
- Practice saving at least 10% from their allowance, birthday or gift money
- Use their 10% to buy wholesale and go into business selling drinks or chips to friends
- Buy those jeans and sneakers only when they go on sale or with discount coupons
- Organize their friends and teach them how to use these money management lessons
The main benefit youngsters will get from following this list of lessons on money is a better appreciation for the value of money as a tool and resource useful to get what they want no matter what's going on in the economy.
