Numerology is system of beliefs that may appeal to people who crave order and a systematic explanation for why and how things occur. This system seeks to interpret and establish numeric patterns in relation to the occurrence of daily events. Those who follow numerology use numbers to explain the past, but also in an effort to predict the future.
The base of numerology is the unique combination of numbers that is created by using your name and birthday. You can use these number to create a numerology chart that is specific to you. Use your numerology chart to help you find hints about the paths that you should take as you make the decisions that will lead you through the ups and downs of life. While the numerology chart may not give you specific details about decisions that are to be made, it can give you insights into who you are and your traits and characteristics. Armed with this new knowledge, you'll have a strong base from which to make the decisions that will make up the ebb and flow of your life.
Just as there are variations in many systems of thought, numerology also has variations. These are mainly based on where the system has its roots and how it grew. These systems have come to be recognized in three different schools of thought. Chaldean, Kabbalah, and the Pythagorean systems all have unique ways of calculating your personal information, and thus, will differ in the numbers that they produce for you. Obviously, with different numbers come different means of interpreting them.
Chaldean Numerology was developed in Ancient Babylon. Unlike Western systems, it is not entirely objective and it determines the numbers values based on sound. The number 9 is considered to be the holiest number in Chaldean Numerology and is kept separate from the number 1-8. In Chaldean Numerology you will also find that they always use compound numbers. Any single number represents the outer levels of a person while all double digit numbers shed light on a person's inner workings.
The Kabbalah system of numerology finds its roots in Hebrew mysticism. This system is unique because it is only concerned with interpreting the name. One doesn't have to look very far to understand the depth of meaning that names carry in the ancient Hebrew culture. The Kabbalah system was originally designed to be used with the Hebrew alphabet, which only has 22 letters. Later, it was adapted to encompass the Greek alphabet and eventually the Roman alphabet. Since it is only concerned with the name, Kabbalah numerology does not utilize the birth date when calculating the personal number. Most purists believe that Kabbalah then, is missing half of your identity in its interpretations, and cannot be as accurate as the Chaldean method.
The Pythagorean system of numerology is generally credited to the mathematician Pythagoras. Also known as the Western number system, modern research however, will show that some aspects of this system actually predate Pythagoras. What he taught was that there is a definable relationship between numbers and the sum of one's life experiences. Pythagoras spent time learning his methods under Hebrew mystics as well as the spiritual leaders of ancient India. His ability to incorporate these Eastern influences with his Western mathematical logic made him a unique pioneer in the fields of philosophy, mathematics, and even Theology.
Though Pythagoras made great strides in the study of numerology, the discipline that carries his name is more of a hybrid than something he created. It is for this reason that many choose to refer to Pythagorean numerology as Western numerology. Thus recognizing its roots in logic, but not recognizing Pythagoras as its creator.
