On August 26th, what would be Mother Teresa's 100th birthday, the Catholic League made one simple request to honor the possible saint's day of birth. The League asked the private owners of the Empire State Building if they would be interested in lighting the tower blue and white in honor of the former Nobel Peace Prize winner. This request did not seem too far fetched to them seeing as the skyscraper has been lit before for occasions such as a Yankee's victory, dog shows, the 60th anniversary of Communist China, Earth Day, and Saint Patrick's Day. It truly seems as if there is little ground for any sort of reason to not allow this minor event to take place. Management at the Empire State building has refused to comment on the decision they made, and they have given no specific reasoning as to why they chose to do what they did.
Mother Teresa won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, and at a point for three years running was named the "Most Admired Woman in the World". She did so much during her life to help those who were poor and suffering. She is most renowned for her extraordinary efforts in Calcutta. She has even done great work in New York City itself. Mother Teresa opened a place for people with AIDS to go for help in Greenwich Village, which can be found in Manhattan.
On top of the Catholic League and its President Bill Donohue being outraged by this decision, some prominent political leaders in New York City itself are siding with the Catholics. With all of the other occasions that the skyscraper has been lit up for, they cannot believe that the owners are refusing to honor a person as admirable as Mother Teresa. City Council Speaker Christine Quinn has been very outspoken about her disappointment in the owners of the Empire State Building. To be fair, Quinn is a Catholic. However, Quinn is also a Democrat who has opposed the Catholic League for many years on certain topics such as gay marriage. Christine Quinn openly supports gay marriage and is gay herself. Although her and the Catholic League have been enemies in the past, she is taking their back on this matter.
Although the reason for this obvious snub has not really been released yet, some people are speculating that it is because Mother Teresa is going to become a saint of the Catholic Church sometime in the near future. However, let's think here, hasn't the skyscraper been lit up for SAINT Patrick's Day before. While the saint's feast day has become a little bit more than just a religious celebration, it still started as one none the less. Also, the towers have celebrated the 60th anniversary of a Communist rule that has murdered countless amounts of its own innocent citizens, which is absolutely ridiculous.
It truly seems like in this situation that most of the world has the Catholic Church's back. People understand that Mother Teresa was a Catholic, and that is fine with them because she helped more than just Catholics. Mother Teresa gave help to those in need, without any form of discrimination. Her character and kindness are a model that everybody could learn a lesson from. Her undying devotion to helping others is something that is rarely seen in today's world anymore, and that deserves some respect from everybody. The Empire State building has been lit up before for many significant, and insignificant reasons. Even if the owners of the building end up refusing to honor the wishes of the Catholic League and all the rest of Mother Teresa's supporters; they really should release a statement as to what led them to snubbing such a great woman from one day's worth of honor and respect.
