difference between Buddhas?
I have never known what the difference is between these interpretations of Buddhas. There is the fat happy Buddha everyone is familiar with, then theres the slighter, and more serene/meditative one. Is it a cultural difference/interpretation or modern/authentic difference ... i really dont know
The plump fellow, sometimes called the "Restaurant Buddha" is actually a representation of a Chinese monk, Budai, who lived about 1,000 years ago.
There are many stories about this fellow, some of them magical, but he's not a buddha -- just a monk. In some of these stories, he appears as Maitreya, the buddha who will come at some point in the future.
The serene, meditative fellow with the slight build is the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, who lived about 2,500 years ago. Of course, no one knows what he actually looked like -- the first representations of him appeared about 300 years after his death.
